MONIQUE REGARD, MD - CWPW's PEDIATRIC & ADOLESCENT GYNECOLOGIST

In years past, a young girl experiencing a gynecological issue, such as an ovarian mass, could not receive care from a gynecologist, because she was too young.

Today, there is a new subspecialty: Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology.

Monique Regard, MD is one of the few pediatricians throughout the nation whose entire practice is devoted to this subspecialty. Dr. Regard was featured on the cover of Westchester Magazine 's Top Doctors issue in November 2009.

Monique Regard, MD's specialty integrates several areas of medicine, such as surgery, endocrinology and dermatology. Dr. regard treats patients who range in age from infancy to adolescence. “It's a tremendous diversity of skill sets,” says Dr. Regard.

Parents bring their babies or young daughters to see Dr. Regard “for very specific reasons,” she explains, "from infants with a twisted ovary, or vaginal opening issues, to adolescent girls with irregular or painful periods."

One rare condition Dr. Regard treats is ovarian tumors. “My special training allows me to carefully analyze the radiology imaging of gynecologic masses, and generally predict if they are non-cancerous. In these cases, I can surgically separate the tumor from the ovary, thereby saving the ovary,” says Dr. Regard.

As a gynecological surgeon with two complementary sub-specializations, Dr. Regard stresses the importance of treating both young girls and adolescents. “Most gynecologists won't accept girls under the age of 12 or 14, and few deal with congenital vaginal birth defects,” she says. Unlike traditional gynecologists, Dr. Regard points out, “I have training and expertise in this area.”

Parents of babies, young girls or adolescents, who suspect their daughter might have a gynecological issue should call Dr. Monique Regard's office at 914-304-5300 to schedule an appointment.
